How to create an alert

An alert notifies you by e-mail when the water crosses the threshold you choose. You need a station, a threshold and a free account, with a confirmed e-mail address and a password.

Choose the station and the threshold

Open the station page you want to follow and press the “Alert me” button, or begin on the alerts page with “Start an alert”. On a phone the form opens as a page; on a desktop the same form appears in a window.

If the station has no published thresholds, the form suggests a level based on its history. You can change it with the arrows or by typing the level in centimetres.

  1. Choose when to get the alert: when the water falls below the low-water threshold (LDC), rises above the high-water threshold (HDC), crosses a level you choose, or is very low or very high for the time of year.
  2. Adjust the level with the arrows or type the level in centimetres.
  3. Press “Continue”.

Create your account

If you have no account, type your e-mail address, tick the terms and press “Send me the link”. The account is free, and you choose the password only from the link you receive. If you already have an account, press “I already have an account” and you return to the same alert.

For a station, “immediately” means at most one message a day; for a country or a river you get a single e-mail a day, at the time you choose. You can change this any time from your account.

  1. Type your e-mail address.
  2. Check the alert summary: the station, the threshold, the direction and whether you also get a forecast message.
  3. Tick the terms and press “Send me the link”.

Confirm and choose your password

You get an e-mail with a link. Open it and choose your password; this confirms your address and signs you in.

You return to the alert you started, with the same station and the same threshold, on the last step. Tick the consent for alert messages and press “Start the alert”. Nothing starts without you.

After that the page says the alert is on. You can find it in “My alerts”, and every e-mail you receive has “Stop the alert”.

  1. Open the e-mail and the link in it.
  2. Choose your password.
  3. Tick the consent and press “Start the alert”.
ScreenshotThe screenshot shows the last step, after you choose the password: the alert in words, with the station, the threshold and the direction, the consent tick box and the “Start the alert” button.

If you do not open the link

Until you open the link and press “Start the alert”, there is no alert and you get no message.

The link is valid for 7 days. If it has expired, ask for a new one on the page that opens; the alert you started is kept.

If you already have a confirmed account, the alert starts immediately from the account, without a link: choose the station and the threshold, tick the consent and press “Start the alert”.

ScreenshotThe screenshot shows the e-mail with the link: the sender, one large button and the note that the link is valid for 7 days. The button leads to the page where you choose your password; it does not start the alert directly from the e-mail.

Keep in mind

The alert is free. Stop it from any e-mail with “Stop the alert”, without signing in; stopping does not delete it, you can start it again from your account.
