Frequently asked questions
- What does today's water level mean?
- Stations with reference levels: 5 · below LDC: 1 · above HDC: 0 · updated: 5 November 2026.
- How many gauges does the Tisa have?
- The Tisa water level is read at 41 gauges with daily readings: 29 in Hungary, 7 in Ukraine and 5 in Serbia. They cover 736 of the river's 966 km, between kilometre 8, at the mouth, and kilometre 744 upstream.
- What are the Tisa's extremes?
- High water rose highest at Mindszent, 1,062 cm on 22 April 2006, at the Szolnok gauge 1,013 cm on the same day, at the Tisa level at Szeged 1,009 cm on 21 April 2006 and at the Titel gauge 818 cm on 17 April 2006. The series lows fell to -394 cm at Martfű, on 20 September 2026, to -389 cm at Kisköre alsó, on 17 September, and to 42 cm at Szeged, on 24 September 2026.
- How navigable is the Tisa?
- The Tisa is navigable for 532 km, and from the mouth to the Novi Bečej dam the waterway is class Va, for vessels up to 110 m, with 2.8 m draught and 3,000 t. The dam remains the main obstacle.
- Why does Szolnok have negative levels?
- Because the gauge zero sits above the river bed: -343 cm meant, on 18 September 2026, 3.43 m below the mark, not a dry river. It is the low of the platform's series, which starts in 2002.
- How is the Copernicus model series read on the Tisa?
- The Copernicus model series, GloFAS and EFAS, is computed discharge in cubic metres per second, not a gauge reading, so it is not compared with centimetres. It is read next to the measured discharge, which exists at 29 of the 41 gauges, and it has its own uncertainty and horizon. The model is not a flood warning.
- Why are the 2026 lows not absolute records?
- The 2026 lows are records of the platform's series, which starts in 2002, not of the gauge: at Titel the known historical low is -85 cm, on 24–25 October 1947. The Tisa water level is judged by series and by gauge, not by the smallest figure alone.
