The Gauge Zero and the Low Water

Mohács is Hungary's southernmost town on the Danube, in Baranya county, at kilometre 1446. The Danube water level at Mohács is read at the gauge beside the town, whose zero lies 79.20 metres above the Hungarian vertical datum. The Danube Commission's low-water mark (LDC) is 144 centimetres and its high-water mark (HDC) 800. Readings on this page are measured from that zero, so a negative value does not mean the river has run dry; it means the water surface has dropped below the datum.

The Gauge Zero and the Low Water

The zero is a fixed level, not the river's usual height. In October 2026 the monthly mean stood at -21 centimetres, and on 10 October the gauge fell to -35, the lowest value in the series shown here; 202 days of 2026 so far have been below the low-water mark. Monthly means slid from 64 centimetres in July to 4 in August and 9 in September. The 144 mark is the Danube Commission's minimum acceptable level for navigation, and from 2024 to October 2026 the Danube level at Mohács stayed below it for 272 days.

The Floods Since 1965

The gauge record remains 984 centimetres, set in 1965. In April 2006 the peak was 925 centimetres, and on 13 June 2013 it was 964, twenty centimetres below the record. The September 2024 flood climbed to 887 centimetres on 24 September and held above the 800 mark for six days; that is the highest figure in the series shown here, which begins only in 2024, not the gauge's record. The gap between 1965 and 2024 is almost a metre.

The Island, the Masks and the Neighbours

At Báta, upstream of Mohács, the Danube divides: the left arm, the Baracskai-Duna, survives only in stretches, and between the two lies the former island of Mohács, 25 kilometres long and 16 kilometres wide, now marsh and dead arms inside the Duna-Dráva National Park. In winter the town puts on its masks: the busójárás, the masked carnival at the end of winter, has been on the UNESCO list since 2009. Fourteen kilometres upstream, the Dunaszekcső gauge showed 977 centimetres in 2013, 13 centimetres more than at Mohács; 21 kilometres downstream, the Bezdan gauge measures the same water on the Serbian bank.
