Frequently asked questions
- How long is the Váh and what basin does it drain?
- 403 km, from Čierny Váh, below Kráľova hoľa, to the Danube at Komárno, with a basin of 15,075 km², almost a third of Slovakia's area. It is the longest river that flows entirely on Slovak territory.
- Which gauges does the Váh have on the platform?
- Eight, all in Slovakia: Strečno, Hubová, Bešeňová, Liptovský Hrádok, Liptovský Mikuláš, Hlohovec, Šaľa and Kolárovo. The platform series starts in 2026 and holds four days at each gauge, so it has no records or long-term averages yet.
- What does the Váh level read at the eight gauges?
- On 27 October 2026 the readings ran from 41 cm at Hlohovec and 44 at Bešeňová up to 136 cm at Šaľa. Strečno showed 79, Hubová 58, Liptovský Hrádok 64, Liptovský Mikuláš 102 and Kolárovo 84.
- Which thresholds does the Váh have?
- None: not one of the eight gauges has a published LDC or HDC, so the page shows the level and its variation without the comparison with low or high water. A threshold that is not displayed does not mean a river without floods, only that no published reference exists for these gauges.
- Where does the Váh reach the Danube and how high does the Danube rise at Komárno?
- At Komárno, at Danube kilometre 1766 and 106.5 m altitude, with a mean discharge of 196 m³/s at its mouth. In September 2024 the Danube rose there to 833 cm on 20 September, and shipping was stopped.
- How is the model forecast read for the Váh?
- Three of the eight gauges carry a 48-hour model forecast; at Šaľa the model gave 130 cm for +24 h and the same 130 cm for +48 h. The forecast is a calculation from rainfall and catchment data, not a gauge reading.
