The Zero That Does Not Move

Dunaújváros stands on the right bank at kilometre 1580.6, in Fejér County, and the Danube water level at Dunaújváros is reckoned from a zero fixed at 90.30 metres. The Danube Commission's low-water mark (LDC) sits at -11 centimetres, the high-water mark (HDC) at 551. On the morning of 24 October 2026 the gauge read -106 centimetres, 95 below the LDC; OVF forecast -96 for the next day and -106 after 72 hours. A minus sign does not mean the river has gone dry — the surface has simply slipped below the mark.

The Zero That Does Not Move

The zero marks a fixed elevation on the staff, not the height the river usually holds, and the 766 days shown on this page make that distinction plain. The lowest reading in that series came on 8 October 2026, at -120 centimetres, and 289 days ran below the LDC. The Danube level at Dunaújváros stayed under the mark on 205 days in 2026; in 2025 the minimum had been -55. On 17 October 2018 the staff stood at -75 centimetres and the daily mean at -77; the 2026 low went 43 centimetres deeper. The water recedes; the river does not run dry.

The Crest of 2013 and the Records

In June 2013 the river stopped at 755 centimetres, 13 above the record of 18 June 1965; on 10 June it had already reached 742 and at 14:00 stood at 749. The April 2006 flood climbed to 724, 18 centimetres short of the record as it then stood. September 2024 brought a crest of 677, some 80 centimetres below 2013, with a peak discharge of 7,914 cubic metres a second; the winter flood of December 2023 stopped at about 550.

The Steel Town, the Bridge and the Neighbours

The town was built from 1950 around the Dunai Vasmű steelworks and was called Sztálinváros from 1951 to 1961. Its industrial port, opened in 1954 on the north side of Szalki Island, was built for the works. At 8.9 kilometres below the gauge, the Pentele Bridge — 1,682 metres long, with a 308-metre main span — has crossed the Danube since 23 July 2007. Sixty-six kilometres upstream, the Budapest gauge reads the water before it reaches the town; twenty kilometres below, the gauge at Dunaföldvár reads it again as the river runs on to Paks. Dunaújváros has 40,818 residents.
