LDC, HDC and the Defence Thresholds

Belgrade stands where the Sava meets the Danube, and the map puts the city at kilometre 1170. Its gauge, however, is not on the Danube: it stands on the Sava, 0.97 kilometres from the mouth, beside the Great War Island. The Sava runs 990 kilometres and drains 97,713 square kilometres before joining the Danube at 1169.9 kilometres from the sea. The Danube water level at Belgrade is therefore read on a Sava gauge. Its zero is fixed at 68.28 metres, and it has been in service since 1920; the catchment above it covers 95,719 square kilometres. The Danube proper is measured at Zemun, at kilometre 1173.

LDC, HDC and the Defence Thresholds

The platform has no LDC or HDC for Belgrade, but the Danube Commission publishes 162 centimetres for LDC and 560 for HDC. RHMZ, Serbia's hydrometeorological service, sets two operative steps of its own: 500 centimetres for regular defence and 600 for emergency. The RHMZ steps are flood-defence thresholds, not navigation marks. On 24 October 2026 the Belgrade water level stood at 134 centimetres, five more than the day before and 28 below LDC. The forecast gave 140, 140, 138 and 139, within a seven-day range of 110 to 160. The water was 16.2 °C.

The 2006 Record and Recent Highs

The highest Danube level at Belgrade in RHMZ's published series is 738 centimetres, on 16 April 2006, when the Danube at Zemun rose to 783. In 2013 the gauge reached 622 on 12 April, and in 2014 it reached 586 on 23 May, though the Sava came down from Sremska Mitrovica at 866, that station's record. In 2024 the maximum was 472 on 6 January, and in autumn the river fell to 133 on 11 September. The series minimum remains -61, on 25 November 1986; 2022 and 2023 brought annual minima of 140 and 142.

The Port and the Road to Novi Sad

The Port of Belgrade, on the Danube beside the Pančevo Bridge, can handle 3 million tonnes a year and 10,000 TEU; in 2023 it moved 4,594,345 tonnes, more than any other port in Serbia. Upstream, 85 kilometres away on the river, the Novi Sad water level shows what is coming down to Belgrade, and the Soko train covers the 75 kilometres between the two cities in 35 minutes.
