No Defence Thresholds on the Station Sheet

At kilometre 1216, on the right bank of the Danube, Slankamen faces the mouth of the Tisza at the foot of Fruška Gora. The village behind the gauge, Stari Slankamen, lies in the municipality of Inđija, Srem, and had 434 residents in 2022. The Danube water level at Slankamen is read at 1,216.020 kilometres from the mouth, on a gauge from 1888, its zero at 69.68 metres; the catchment above covers 254,961 square kilometres.

No Defence Thresholds on the Station Sheet

There is no LDC or HDC for Slankamen in the platform, and the page says so. RHMZ, Serbia's hydrometeorological service, publishes no defence thresholds for this gauge either: both columns on the station sheet carry a dash, while Novi Sad lists 450 and 700 centimetres and Zemun 550 and 650. On 24 October 2026 the Slankamen water level stood at 33 centimetres, and the forecast gave 33, 30, 30 and 32. The platform's series opens on 22 October: 18 centimetres, then 26.

The 2006 Peak and the Dry Years

The annual maxima come from the tables of daily levels in the RHMZ yearbooks. In 2006 the river climbed to 793 centimetres on 15 April, the highest figure in the yearbooks consulted; at Zemun, 43 kilometres downstream, the record, 783 centimetres, came on 16 April. In 2013 the Danube level at Slankamen peaked at 662 centimetres on 17 June, a day after Novi Sad reached 679. The 2014 maximum was 550 on 24 May, and 2024 opened with 580 on 4 January; the September wave stopped at 495 on the 29th, short of the January peak. The dry years appear in the minima: 20 centimetres on 21 August 2022, 84 on 11 September 2024, 100 on 23 August 2013. In 2026 the platform series touched 4 centimetres on 14 October.

Tisza, Loess and the Old Village

The Tisza enters the Danube opposite Stari Slankamen. Behind the village the right bank rises in loess terraces: the loess profile there, a nature monument since 1975, exposes alternating bands of loess and fossil soil. The protected landscape Ade i odseci kod Slankamena covers 407.83 hectares of riverbank and islands, with loess steppe and cellars dug into the loess. The name means "salty stone"; the Roman castrum Acumincum stood here, the Battle of Slankamen was fought in 1691, and Novi Slankamen was founded in 1783.

Upstream, Downstream and Belgrade

Thirty-nine kilometres upstream, the gauge reading at Novi Sad shows what is coming down. Forty-three kilometres below the village, the Zemun gauge measures the river after the Tisza has mixed into it. Belgrade is close, but its gauge is not on the Danube: Belgrade's Sava gauge sits 0.97 kilometres above the confluence, so what it records belongs to the Sava.
