The Danube is monitored at 140 stations in 9 countries, from Germany downstream to Ukraine. Its stations on the Danube cover river kilometres 2582 to 18. The longest series belongs to Budapest, with readings since 1901: its lowest level was -76 cm on 1933-01-30, its highest 889 cm on 2013-06-10. Low water is most frequent in October, when 13% of station-days fall below the low-water level (LDC). High water above HDC occurs mostly in June (3% of station-days). In the irrigation season (April–September), 4% of station-days were below LDC.

Frequently asked questions
- What does today's water level mean?
- Stations with reference levels: 74 · below LDC: 66 · above HDC: 1 · updated: 6 November 2026.
- How many gauges does the Danube have on the platform?
- The Danube water level is read at 140 gauges with daily readings, in nine countries: 27 in Hungary, 26 in Germany, 23 in Romania, 15 in Slovakia, 13 in Serbia, 12 in Bulgaria, 10 in Austria, 10 in Croatia and 4 in Ukraine. They cover 2,563 of the river's 2,850 km, between kilometres 18 and 2,581.
- What are the Danube's extremes?
- The platform's records are 1,275 cm at Passau Donau, on 4 June 2013, 1,018 cm at the Bratislava gauge on 6 June 2013, 889 cm at the Budapest gauge and 661 cm at the Giurgiu gauge on 24 May 2014. In 2026 low water fell to -214 cm at Giurgiu and to -153 cm at Drobeta-Turnu Severin, on 31 August.
- Which official thresholds does the Danube have?
- The thresholds are LDC and HDC: at Achleiten 258 and 510 cm, at Batina 8 and 615 cm, at Apatin 47 and 674 cm, and at Baja 126 and 765 cm. They are navigation thresholds, not flood defence levels: LDC is reached or exceeded on 94% of the ice-free days in a 30-year period. 84 of the 140 gauges have an LDC.
- How navigable is the Danube?
- The waterway is 2,850 km in three sectors, with limits at Gönyű, kilometre 1,791.33, and at Turnu Severin, kilometre 931. Of the 18 lock plants, 16 are on the upper sector and two at the Iron Gates, at kilometres 942.90 and 863.70.
- How is the Copernicus model series read on the Danube?
- The Copernicus model series, GloFAS and EFAS, is computed discharge in cubic metres per second, not a gauge reading, so it is not compared with centimetres. It is read next to the measured discharge, which exists at 46 of the 140 gauges, and it has its own uncertainty and horizon. The model is not a flood warning.
- Why are levels at different gauges not comparable?
- Each gauge has its own zero, and the Danube water level is measured against it: that is why LDC drops to -17 cm at Giurgiu and rises to 415 cm at Passau. On the same day Passau showed 381 cm and Budapest 18 cm, without the first figure being higher. Only readings at the same gauge are comparable.
